In the framework of the Citizen-rights project trainers of the Foundation for Democratic Youth in co-operation with the Hungarian Europe Society held sessions about democratic rights and responsibility for altogether hundred students of the Petrik Lajos Bilingual Secondary School, the Alternative Secondary School of Economics, the Városmajori Secondary School and the Politechnikum between November 2015 and January 2016.

Security and Liberty

In June 2015 a new book entitled "The Rule of Law and Terrorism" edited by Petra Bárd was published by hvgorac publishing house. The starting momentum of the volume was a conference held by HES under the same title in 2006. The publication has been sponsored by HES from a grant of the Open Society Institute.

On 10 September 2014, Roger Golland, a British diplomat and political analyst talked to the members of the Hungarian Europe Society about the possible outcomes of the referendum on Scottish independence to be held on 18 September 2014, and its European implications in the contexts of the rise of nationalisms in Europe and the financial-economic crisis.

"The creation of a Europe-wide database of NGO-s supporting the development of European integration, as well as a database on private foundations and other sponsors ready to support them, would highly assist the activities and horizontal cooperation in this field. Partnerships might emerge among those organizations which are prepared and capable to work together for the future of Europe", suggested Györgyi Kocsis on a focus-group discussion organised by consultant firms at the Representation of the European Commission to Hungary on 16 November 2013.

On 13 November 2013, the Vice-President of the European Commission answered in details to the letter of four Hungarian NGO-s, including the Hungarian Europe Society, in which the civil organisations had criticised the procedure of the Hungarian media authority regarding the licensing of frequency to Klubrádió.

Comparison between Hungary and Norway

"Changing models of media authorities" - was the title of the public debate held on October 3rd in the House of the European Union by the Center for Independent Journalism and the Mérték Médiaelemző Műhely (a think tank for media research and analysis). The organisers invited the interested media professionals to discuss the ideal structure and functions of the media authority.

A Free and Pluralistic Media to Sustain European Democracy

On 14 June 2013 Hungarian NGO-s completed their opinion on the recommendations of the High Level Group on Media Freedom and Pluralism (Frieberga Committee) as part of a public consultation initiated by the European Commission. HES was represented by Judit Bayer and István Hegedűs at the meetings of the civil organisations.

As a member of the international "Visa-free Europe Coalition", the Hungarian Europe Society, together with the Ukrainian NGO “Europe without Barriers” and the CEU Center for EU Enlargement Studies, was one of the organisers of the event entitled „EU Visa Policy: What Neighbors Could Do? Example of Hungary”; which took place on 8 April 2013 at Central European University (CEU) in Budapest.

The Hungarian Europe Society, as the partner of the German Marshall Fund of the United States of America, was once again the organiser of the study tour of US fellows in Budapest between 22 and 26 March 2013. The guests had professional and political meetings, including presentations by HES members. Györgyi Kocsis made an introductory lecture on the Hungarian political development, whilst István Hegedűs spoke about Hungary as a member state of the European Union, and Zsuzsanna Szelényi talked about the political concepts of Együtt 2014 Movement.

The Hungarian Europe Society, Congratulations, the Hungarian News Agency, and Censorship

On 11 July 2012, the Hungarian News Agency (MTI) refused to publish the declaration of the Hungarian Europe Society in an e-mail sent to the NGO. In this statement HES had congratulated to the journalists Aranka Szávuly and Balázs Nagy Navarro to their media prize announced in Leipzig. HES objected the decision of MTI in its response sent also in an e-mail. The conflict became public in an opinion-piece published on hvg.hu on 15 July 2012.

The Center for European Union Research of the Central European University and the Hungarian Europe Society organised a roundtable debate entitled „Where are they? Civil society actors and European integration” at the Central European University on 17 April 2012. HES was represented by Rita Galambos.
