Facing the European Elections

The international conference of the Hungarian Europe Society took place at the Central European University in Budapest on 3-4 June 2004.

Following the enlargement of the European Union, European elections will be held for the first time in the ten new member states. In Hungary, the political competition of the parties for the 24 seats in the European Parliament might put the political dilemmas of a united Europe, the issues related to the institutional system and the ongoing reform of the European Union into the lime-light - yet again after the referendum last year -, whilst differences in domestic politics might be sharpened due to diverging judgment of possibilities and challenges emerging after Hungary's accession to the EU.
